The interesting information is that when I tap the NEF FileBrowser does a countdown of roughly 15 seconds and reports a download rate of ~1.2 MB/s, which is consistent with a 18 to 20 MB NEF file. The time from tap to display of the NEF is about 20 to 30 seconds. They have the same resolution so viewing them allows the same level of zoom, and the quality on the iPhone looks about the same, which is what I would expect. The files I am testing with come from a Nikon D7000 which was saving both NEF and JPG for each photo, on to separate SD cards. I’m goig to do some more testing and research to see if I can work out if it is viewing the NEF or the imbedded JPEG. It does take about 30 seconds to load a NEF, but I don’t need to copy it to the iPhone first, and once viewed, or scanned by the media functionality in the MPW, it seems to retain the thumbnail image in the directory view, which is nice. whether it is the imbedded JPEG or the actual NEF is hard to say. Well, it is still iOS 7, vs iOS 8 on the iPad, but seems to work the same.Īnyway, Filebrowser does seem to allow some viewing of NEF files. I’m using an iPhone4 at the moment rather than the iPad which is usually used, but that shouldn’t make difference.
I did uninstall PhotoRaw Lite though to see if I could still view the NEF files, and I could. I had already scanned and found the MPW, and testing a NAS connection compared to a normal connection made no difference in functionality. Okay, conneting to the MPW using a NAS selection wasn’t necessary for me. Could that be what is happening on your device? In my case, I select the NEF file in File Browser and it opens the image in PhotoRaw.
Note that File Browser is able to send a file to another application to open it.

But it does some editing just to open the files, which I don’t like, and I think it also temporarily copies the file to my iPad to view it, so I probably won’t buy the full version. I have also been testing PhotoRaw Lite, which is able to view and edit NEF files. Could you confirm that File Browser is able to show you the images, and not just their file name, and explain where this compatibility mode setting is? I can’t find any setting like “Compatibility Mode” either, to get it to work. I’ve been testing File Browser Lite, and while it does see the Nikon RAW (NEF) files I use, it doesn’t show or preview them.
